the west highland way with a 3 year old:

our full kit list

the west highland way is a 96 mile / 154km hike from milngavie, on the outskirts of glasgow, to fort william, at the base of ben nevis.  on average it takes hikers around 5-7 days to complete while either camping or using accommodation.

this trail took my daughter & i 12 days (moving) to complete, camping for 11 of those days.  my full rucksack weighed anything from 16-20kg per day depending on food, water & clothing worn.

camping kit

we camped for 11 nights during our west highland way attempt.  luggage transfer companies are available & very in demand for this trail, but due to wanting flexibility & wanting to wild camp on certain sections it meant i had to carry our full gear for the duration instead of using this service.

backpack - osprey ariel 55l

had this bag for a few years but this was the first proper use from it.  slightly smaller capacity than i would've liked but meant we could only take necessary gear & not overpack.

bag liner - osprey ultralight medium liner 50-70l

i added the bag liner as an extra form of protection in case the rain cover failed.

dry bags - sea to summit dry bags 35l & 5l

used the dry bags to try save space within the bag so took everything out of their stuff sacks & packed loose into a dry bag instead.  the 35l bag held all our sleeping gear together; pillows, mats, bags & liner.  5l bag held all the electronics.

tent - montegra 3 man geo tent

a new tent for us gifted by regatta & was absolutely fantastic on trail.  went for a 3 man dome shape so we had plenty room to sit up (especially if it was raining), have room for our stuff to the side & not be squashed so it worked well for us.  heavier than i'd liked it to be though, coming in at about 3.4kg, so was a big weight to carry.  held up fantastic through a thunderstorm & higher wind gusts.

sleeping mats - vango aotrom thermo sleeping mat x2

my usual go to sleeping mats as they've got a good r rating on them & are relatively light to carry.  after about a week straight of camping i really started to struggle with my mat though as i'm a side sleeper & this isn't the best for that.  had to sleep on my front most nights as the hip pain was getting bad!  great for one or two nights but will likely upgrade now.

child sleeping bag - mount store slumber sack

a fantastic sleeping bag for littles.  packs down small, goes to about -5 & has detachable arms for cooling down.  invaluable on this trail.

adult sleeping bag - beyond outdoors 3 season

had this sleeping bag for a few years & is good enough.  ideally i would've liked a lighter, warmer bag but with the liner it was great for what i needed at the time.

sleeping bag liner - sea to summit thermalite liner

this was the first trip i'd used this liner on & i'm so glad i had it with me.  the amount of warmth it adds to a sleeping bag while taking up little to no room is incredible.  there was some nights where i really needed it as the temperature dropped & there was enough room inside to bring little in with me too.

pillow - sea to summit aeros ultralight pillow x2

these pillows were very handy to have with us as they packed down super small & could be inflated to suit both our individual needs.  the one thing i didn't like is how they slide about on the sleeping mat unless they're in your sleeping bag, but that wasn't possible for littles bag so we had to put a jumper under hers.

stove - oex tacana stove set

i originally took this stove as it packs into itself with the gas fitting inside it & essentially has built in wind blockers.  i've used it on countless trips so i knew it was great, until i accidentally broke the starter ignition so the gas was a bit dodgy then wouldn't light.  had to swap it out on day 8 for the msr pocket rocket & another cook set.

stove - msr pocket rocket

my usual go to stove which i should've taken on day 1 but decided the oex one would be better, hindsight!  this stove is fantastic, packs away in a tiny box which fits a lighter too.  only negative is this needs to be used with a wind shield as the pots sit higher & the wind knocks the flame out.

bowls - sea to summit x bowls x2

great bowls to have when backpacking as they collapse so barely take up any room in the bag.

cutlery - tiso utility spork

great wee sporks.  pretty sturdy & link together to take up no room or weight in the bag.

walking poles - regatta carbon walking poles x4

an essential we really couldn't have done without.  i needed them for the support due to the weight on my back but little wanted them to match me.  turns out they're great for motivating little people as you can use them for multiple trail games.

sit mat - kumfie sit mat x2

took these to encourage us to stop & rest more, especially if the ground was wet, which did the trick.  they are so lightweight & slot nicely into the front pocket so were within easy reach.  glad i had them & little picked her own colour too, making her want to use it more.

child carrier - trail magik

only used for a couple miles over the first two days.  went in the bag & didn't come out again but handy to keep in the bag as it folds down super small.

clothing

it may look like we overpacked with clothing, but the forecast for our hike was terrible; it was due to rain or be cold a lot, so we packed layers & clothing to keep us dry.  naturally, the forecast was completely wrong & was sunny all but 1 day.  this meant a lot of clothing was carried & not worn, adding a fair bit of weight to my pack.

Technology

some would argue this is extra that could be done without, but for me it was essential.

camera - sony a7ii with 28-70mm lens & spare battery

a no brainer for me on taking this despite so many people telling me not to because of the weight.

camera - gopro hero & spare battery

took this with the intention of filming videos on this rather than my phone or camera, but it never left the bag once.  i stupidly packed it away in the dry bag towards the bottom & forgot about it each day so it got taken out for good for part 2.

powerbank - goji 20k

a little on the big & heavy side but did about 5 days before needing topped up.

head torch -  nightsearcher

didn't use once due to the bright mornings & later nights.  better to have & not need though.

tripod - cullmann carvai 816tc tripod

so so pleasantly surprised by this tripod.  bought to replace my old one because of the weight difference & wasn't expecting much but it's fantastic.  at only 500g it's so lightweight & packs into the side pocket of my bag nicely.

kids camera

annoyingly broke on day 1.  thankfully didn't weigh much but was taken out for part 2.

others / TOILETRIES

necessary items that just make everything a bit smoother.

midgie repellent - smidge repellent & headnets

these was more a precautionary than a need as it was too early in the season for them to be biting but i get badly bitten when they are so rather have just in case.

trowel & sanitiser - sea to summit pocket trowel

handy wee thing to carry for when needs must.  can pack toilet roll inside the handle too which is a nice bonus.

towel - sea to summit airlite quick dry towel

super lightweight & quick drying.  packs down super small as well so takes up no room in the bag.

first aid - lifesystems hiking first aid kit

washing - sea to summit wilderness wash

travel sized shampoo & conditioner

kids sized toothbrush & toothpaste

travel sized hairbrush & bobbles

suncream

vasaline & plasters
